SM Sheik Mainland Acrylic Paint Comprehensive Guide

The BT series brush paints have passed the full spectrum of toxicity tests by UL laboratories.

The BT series brush paints perform exceptionally well with fast drying times and quick strength development. Their peak strength is comparable to oil-based paints. Normally, a 2-3 minute drying time allows for touch, and depending on temperature and humidity, preliminary strength is achieved in 2-5 hours, facilitating assembly. After one day, the paint reaches a level of strength that resists scratching by fingernails, and the maximum strength is attained after seven days. However, optimal strength is contingent upon a certain film thickness; a particularly thin coat may reduce strength. BT paint films can withstand normal handling and are resistant to decal softeners, X20, and ZIPPO lighter fluid. They are suitable for various staining methods and can be overlaid with different types of oil-based and enamel paints, offering exceptional self-leveling properties that easily create a brush stroke-free finish.

For thorough cleaning of BT paint, medical-grade alcohol is sufficient, with higher proof alcohol being more effective.

To remove recently applied but not yet cured paint without affecting the base color, use BT brush cleaner while the paint is still wet.

Generally, BT paints can be directly applied to plastic or GK parts without putty, offering good adhesion and strength. For superior works, the use of putty is recommended to enhance adhesion, solidity, and to provide a uniform base color, ensuring consistent color display when the same paint is applied. Common putty colors include black, white, and gray. White putty, due to its naturally weak covering power, has an increased proportion of white pigments, although its covering ability may not meet everyone’s standards (current BT white putty has been enhanced). Gray and black putties have excellent coverage, usually requiring just a single application.
Created for convenience, BT metallic putty has strong covering power and offers excellent adhesion and durability on plastic and GK parts, often covering in one go. Particularly, the adhesion and firmness of metallic putty on GK parts are unmatched. This metallic putty uses the resin from the GG series, which is highly compatible with GK parts.
The BT2000 series includes solid matte colors, with numerous shades available. They are ready to use after shaking and can be applied directly without putty, offering ease for less demanding coloring tasks. Colors within the same series can be mixed freely.
This series comprises metallic colors, also offering a wide range of shades ready for application after shaking and without the need for putty.
The Color Source series does not contain white pigment, providing the highest saturation of single colors. They can be mixed within the BTSY series or with the BT2000 series to enhance saturation.
Generally intended to be applied over a white base for the best appearance, it is recommended to use a 365 nm UV light for reflection effects. Fluorescent colors can be mixed with all brush paints to enhance vibrancy, with a mix ratio of over 50% fluorescent to less than 50% solid color for best results.
This mimics oil-based enamel but is water-based, non-toxic, and odorless. While water can be used for wiping, BT brush cleaner achieves the best results. Before applying water enamel, a thin layer of brush paint varnish should be applied to seal the surface, facilitating easier cleaning. Sponge swabs should be used for wiping, as fiber swabs do not absorb well and may not clean effectively.
A drop of shaken paint can be placed on the cap to dry, aiding in color selection for future use without the need to check the color name or number each time.
SM paints differ in application technique from other brands, as they are pre-mixed and ready for use after shaking. They do not require water mixing; instead, use SM’s wet palette for dilution and application.
  • A “brain-free” thin application using a flat brush with minimal paint is advised. Thin layers are preferable, and multiple thin applications are recommended for light colors, while dark colors may only need 2-3 applications. This method preserves model details and speeds up the coloring process.
  • For “Saturated Coloring,” apply a thick coat and allow for self-leveling. It might not look good while wet, but once dry, the finish is satisfying.
  • The “Makeup Sponge Patting Technique” is ideal for large parts, with the sponge lightlytapped onto the part after dipping into a small amount of BT paint. Ensure the sponge has minimal paint for about 20% coverage with each tap. This method, when perfected, is highly efficient and can produce a finish comparable to spray painting.Spray Application of Hand Paints: Brush paints can be adapted for spray application by adding 10-20% BT1303 retarder, which improves the feel and slows down drying for a smoother application. For spray painting, dilute putty and solid colors with three parts 95% medical-grade alcohol, and metallic colors with five parts alcohol.
Brush paints typically do not require masking. Overpainted areas can be cleaned with alcohol or covered with a different color. Combine with water enamel paints for more complex work. Use masking tape when necessary but press the edges with a blade before removing to prevent rough edges.
Sticky Paint: This issue has been resolved in all SM brush paints produced in the last year. Older batches may experience stickiness if the paint was dried too quickly with a hairdryer or in direct sunlight, which can prevent proper film formation. Ensure the paint is well-mixed before use and use promptly after mixing to avoid water absorption and stickiness. For protection, apply a top coat after the paint has dried completely.
Note on Mixing Papers: Some brands of mixing paper may not hold SM’s water-based resin solution well, causing only the pigment to remain on the surface, which could lead to cracking or powdering of the paint film. It is recommended to use SM’s own mixing paper with wet palettes to prevent this issue.

  • 发黏问题的解决：2022年之前生产的部分批次可能存在漆面回黏现象。通过改进干燥过程和确保漆料充分摇匀，现在销售的笔涂漆已彻底解决此问题。漆膜的光洁和牢固度也得到显著提高。

  • 调色纸的选择：市场上的一些调色纸可能无法承载酋长漆的水性树脂，导致漆料性能下降。建议使用酋长大陆专用的调色纸，以避免树脂漏失，确保调色准确性和漆膜质量。

  • Same Day/Next Business Day Delivery is available in select Metro Sydney, Wollongong, Central Coast, and Canberra areas. Eligibility is based on your postcode. This method does not accept AusPost PO box/shop addresses. In rare instances where same-day delivery is not possible, items will be delivered the next business day. Please note, that refunds are not issued in these cases.

We offer free shipping for the majority of items on our website. However, for items that exceed 22kg or 0.25 cubic meters and are being shipped to remote areas (our warehouse is located in NSW), there may be a surcharge applied. The specific surcharge will depend on the packaging size determined by the manufacturer after the product is released. We will contact the receiver if a surcharge is required upon dispatch.

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer free shipping for heavy items that cannot be shipped with AusPost. These items require alternative shipping methods, which come with additional costs that we are unable to absorb. However, we will always strive to provide our customers with the most cost-effective shipping options available for their heavy items.
